FT: Alfreton Town 1    1 Mansfield Town

23 July 2016

Alfreton Town held Mansfield Town to a 1-1 draw at the lmpact Arena on Saturday, and could well have gome on to win with a little more steadiness in front of goal.

Trailing to a freak goal as early as the fifth minute the Reds persevered and had drawn level by the 29th minute through Adam Priestley.

Fabian Spiess will not enjoy being reminded about Matt Green's goal, the Reds' keeper seeming to routinely deal with a hopeful punt from wide right, yet allowing the ball to squirm into the back of the net.

Mansfield had started brightly with Todd Jordan having to clear George Taft's header from a corner off the line just 90 seconds in, Spiess then holding a Danny Rose header from an Ashley Hemmings cross before Green squandered a good chance on 21 minutes.

Alfreton gradually worked their way into contention on a particularly hot afternoon

with Dan Bradley's snap shot in the 22nd minute drifting inches beyond the back post, but Bradley then played Priestley down the left seven minutes later for the striker to cut in and drill a low shot beyond Stags' keeper Scott Shearer.

Spiess dealt much better with a deep cross from Kevan Hurst, but in response Priestley tested Shearer with a shot from a Joe Doyle cross, the first half ending with Cieran Keane heading over from a Bradley cross.

Jordan set up Evan Garnett for a cross that led to Bradley winning a 57th minute corner, then Shearer had to race out of goal to thwart Garnett, the impetus of the keeper's header taking him closer to the half-way line than the sanctity of his goal.

Rhys Bennett went close for the visitors with a header from a Chris Clements free-kick, Sam Smith miscued from a good position for the hosts, then right at the end Spiess finally atoned for his error with a point-blank save from Rose.
