Alfreton Town had to settle for a share of the spoils, when Salford City visited the Impact Arena on Saturday. The Reds took the lead in the 24th minute. Sam Smith began the move, nodding Andy Monkhouse's superb cross into Paul Clayton's path six yards out, giving keeper Joel Lynch no chance with a clinical finish.
Salford peresevered in a lively encounter and drew level after 79 minutes, with Sam Walker hooking home, after a cross had been partially cleared.
Manager Nicky Law, opted to play Ross Etheridge in goal, having arrived on loan from Doncaster Rovers. He became the latest in a growing list of Red's players to follow in their father's footsteps and grace the home turf. Father Neil had kept goal for Alfreton almost 24 years earlier, playing alongside the legendary Keith Edwards under the tutelage of managers, Danny Hayes and Paul Mitchell, and was in attendance on Saturday
Salford had created several early openings without really testing Etheridge. Allen Phenix and Walker were all off target before Monkhouse had a shot blocked by Lynch.
After the opening goal, Smith saw a glancing header drift narrowly wide from a Clayton cross.
The half also saw a number of feisty challenges from both sides.
Five minutes after the break, Etheridge saved from James Poole. Clayton headed wide from a Westcarr free kick and an inswinging corner from Ryan Wilson, almost squeezed into the net.
After Walker's equaliser, Westcarr saw an angled drive blocked and Etheridge saved from Jordan Hulme at the other end.
