Alfreton Town slipped to a second successive defeat

Alfreton Town slipped to a second successive defeat without scoring when they lost by a solitary goal at Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday in the Vanarama National League North.

The opening spell had seen the Reds take the game to their opponents, with both Craig Westcarr and Adam Smith going close before the latter smashed a header against the crossbar from a George Edmundson cross.

lt was to no avail however when, with 20 minutes on the clock, Nicky Wroe rifled home from an angle after Nicky Boshell had hammered a Bradford free-kick against Fabian Spiess's crossbar.

Three minutes later Brad McGowan somehow managed to scoop Oli Johnson's effort off the line, then Spiess had to pull off a defiant save from the same player, Alfreton's sole response of the first half being a promising turn in the box by Sam Smith before former Reds' keeper Jon Worsnop smothered the ball.

Having soaked up early second half pressure from the hosts Alfreton did come much more into the reckoning, although they were hampered by injuries to both Westcarr and midfielder Paul Marshall.

Terry Kennedy and Sam Smith each glanced headers wide as the hour mark approached, then on 73 minutes Worsnop made a remarkable reflex save to prevent Kennedy from heading home an Adam Smith corner.

A succession of flag-kicks ensued with Kennedy again to the fore with an effort that went agonisingly close, but it was down to Ryan Wilson's late clearance that kept the goals conceded to one when Emile Sinclair was sent through clinically by Wroe.
