Alfreton Town's penultimate pre-season friendly ended prematurely on 67 minutes when Reds Academy keeper Danny Hatfield suffered a facial injury which resulted in hospitalisation following a clash of heads with Sutton Town substitute Joe Ward.
The Reds dominated the first half and built up a 2-0 interval lead only for the home side to pull level after the break before the unfortunate accident brought the game to an early close.
With manager Nicky Law unavailable, the Reds were under the stewardship of Russ O'Neill and a host of trialists - eight of the 16 on duty - were named against the Central Midlands League Premier Division outfit.
Alfreton began strongly, and former goalkeeper Gav Saxby produced several outstanding saves early on including a 12th minute double save. The first was from a full-blooded Jake Moult drive from 12 yards which Saxby parried, Moult chased the ball to the bvyline and a stinging low angled drive was turned behind by the home keeper.
Anthony Wilson failed to take advantage of two very good chances on 28 and 30 minutes. The first saw a terrific ball in from the left pick Wilson out unmarked five yards out but he was unable to make any contact.
Two minutes later another superb ball in just skimmed away in front of the Reds striker.
Alfreton were not to be denied though and they took charge with two goals in a minute on 36 and 37 with trialists netting both, the first from 18 yards which found the corner of the home net and secondly after a corner by Simon Russell had fallen to the feet of another trialist which was smacked in from six yards.

It was almost three shortly into the second half but Saxby produced another good save low down.
Having come on at half-time Danny Hatfield produced a save from Sutton's first shot on target on 54 minutes.
Sutton reduced the arrears from the penalty spot on 62 minutes after Ward was brought down and Hollingsworth netted the spot kick.
The home side drew level on 65 minutes when former Red Andy White was fouled 35 yards out and with the defence still trying to organise, Hollingsworth smashed the free kick low into the far corner.
Two minutes later the game was brought to an abrupt halt after the injury to Danny Hatfield.
