2005/06 season match No.22
Derbyshire Senior Cup, 2nd round
Tuesday, December 13th, 2005
Glossop North End 1, Alfreton Town 3
Match report by Gordon Foster (Mansfield CHAD). Pics by Phil Lucic.

ALFRETON came back from a half time deficit to overpower North West Counties strugglers Glossop in the Derbyshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night and set up a local derby quarter-final tie at Belper.
The Reds fell behind to an early goal as Glossop went looking to cause an upset, but a Mick Godber brace and one from Mark Turner, who has now scored in four successive midweek games, ensured they did not slip on any banana skin.
The down side for the Reds, though, was the loss through injury of player-manager Gary Mills after 27 minutes.
The Hillmen, who play three levels below Alfreton, made a lively start and struck the first blow after just four minutes, Lee Evans slotting home after being put in on goal by Lee Blackshaw.
Five minutes later Godber outpaced Andy Levendis, but the inrunning Lee Featherstone could not quite connect with the subsequent ball across goal at the far post.
Glossop were celebrating a second goal when Gary Kharas had the ball in the net soon afterwards, but it proved to be unlucky 13th minute for them and it was ruled out for offside - only marginally, though.
Even so, the home side continued to play above themselves and Shaun Bodkin did well to block Paul Nibloe’s piledriver midway through the half.
It was Alfreton’s turn to be denied by an offside flag a minute later when Peter Duffield steered home Turner’s squared pass.
With Chris White on for the injured Mills, the substitute set up a chance for Godber who fired just wide.
But Glossop still had more of the play, and Dave Young almost came up with a repeat of White’s goal at Fleetwood, when his cross shot from wide hit the inside of the post. Loui Bovis latched onto the rebound but Bodkin was alert to turn the shot for a corner.
Alfreton picked up the pace as the half drew to a close with Turner heading over, Godber denied by keeper Stuart Williams’ block tackle, Ryan Clarke’s follow-up cleared off the line, and another Godber deflected effort pushed to one side by Williams, Dave Robinson unable to get a touch at the far post.
The second half was only 90 seconds old when Godber headed home Bettney’s corner, which was won when Williams tipped White’s deep free kick over the bar.
Emeka Nwadike went close from a corner by White, who then saw his swerving shot saved as the Reds piled on the pressure.
But it was no surprise when Alfreton finally took a 64th-minute lead. Ryan Clarke flicked on Bettney’s corner, and Turner headed in from close range.
Glossop’s only chance of the half arrived on 70, Danny Yates’ 30-yard direct free kick going too high.
The Reds made the tie safe five minutes later. Yates backheaded Bettney’s free kick towards his own goal, Williams pushed the ball upward, and as it dropped over him towards the line, Godber’s header made absolutely certain.
And it might have been 4-1 six from time as, in an incredible sequence, Jon Stevenson’s tremendous drive struck Mark Woodcock on the line, fellow substitute Neil Ross’ measured follow-up hit Godber almost on the line, and from the rebound, Duffield’s spectacular overhead effort beat the far post.
