2004/05 - Match No. 31
Derbyshire Senior Cup, quarter final
Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

Glapwell 2, Alfreton Town 3
Report by Gordon Foster (Mansfield CHAD)
ALFRETON edged into the semi-final of the Derbyshire Senior Cup on Wednesday night, defeating spirited NCEL hosts Glapwell 3-2 at their homely Hall Corner ground.
The Reds sent a strong side, giving debuts to central defender Paul Teather and central midfielder Richard Cooper, both of whom impressed with Cooper their man of the match.
A season’s best crowd of 161 at Hall Corner saw Mark Sale glance home a header from a Peter Duffield cross in the fifth minute to put the visitors in the driving seat.
Sale had another towering header cleared off the line by the impressive Mark Robinson in the 14th minute, before Glapwell thought they gained a 31st-minute equaliser.
Player-manager Lee Wilson got around the back of the Reds defence on the right and beat the advancing Lee Butler from a tight angle. Grant Brown got the ball off the line only as far as Jamie Morgan, whose follow-up was hacked away by Carl Bradshaw with the home side claiming in vain that the ball had crossed the line.
But it was Alfreton who got one which did count two minutes later. Bradshaw’s free kick from inside the semi-circle was brilliantly parried by James Lindley, but Duffield was first to the rebound and netted from close in.
Glapwell got one back within 20 seconds of the start of the second half. Craig Trodden was allowed to run onto an astute ball over the top, and executed a delightful lob over Lee Butler.
As Glapwell went looking for an equaliser, skipper Adam Walker forced Butler into a diving save.
But the Reds re-opened their two-goal advantage in the 62nd minute. David Holmes intercepted a crossfield pass and burst through the middle.
He was well policed by Damien Magee, but Duffield took up the running and saw his shot blocked. However, the rebound fell kindly for Sale to notch his second.
Both sides introduced all their three substitutes, and James Dooley had been on for less than a minute when he got Glapwell’s second 11 minutes from time.
The substitute latched onto a clearance from a left wing corner, and his volley took enough of a deflection to guide it out of Butler’s reach.
