Gedling Town 0, ALFRETON TOWN 4

Report by Gordon Foster (Mansfield CHAD). Pics by Phil Lucic and Kev Miles.

ALFRETON Town turned on the style with four well taken goals to impress their travelling fans in their first public pre-season game of the new campaign at the Riverside on Tuesday night.
The Reds effectively fielded completely different sides in each half, but in both cases they ran the show with some attractive build-up play culminating in two goals in each half.
And while it must be borne in mind that Gedling play four steps lower, new boss Nicky Law seems to have unearthed a few gems in his trawl around the lower leagues for players.
“Results in games like this are not important although all the goals were well taken,” said Law afterwards.
“At this point it’s more about getting fitness levels up and looking at various options.
“We used a number of trialists who are obviously out to impress, but we’ve a fair way to go yet, and we are probably a couple of weeks and two or three games away from finalising the squad.”
Daniel Pringle, from Woodley Sports, capitalised on a defensive error to fire the Reds into a 21st-minute lead, then a dream of an angled cross from Dave Cockerill (from Stocksbridge) picked out high-leaping former Parkgate goal machine Brian Cusworth to bury a downward header on 38.
Matt Outram got the third with a delightful chip from a Matt Glass corner on 67, and Glass completed the scoring on 76, scoring at the second attempt following being sent clear down the left, after young Gedling keeper Louis Sprigg had done very well to block the first effort.
Full backs Russell Headley (Woodley) and Cockerill impressed in the first half, while Cusworth and Pringle looked a more than useful pairing up front in the first half.
In the end the winning margin could have been greater but for a couple of excellent saves by Sprigg - in particular one at point blank range to deny Outram after Mark Nangle had flicked on a cross from James Cullen.
Gedling’s nearest effort to a goal came from James Whitehead whose half-hit cross-shot from the right almost crept in on 27 before being deflected for a corner by keeper James Lindley.
