ALFRETON Town's 2009/10 season got underway in West Yorkshire on Saturday with a resounding victory over troubled Farsley Celtic, who have been forced to start their Blue Square North campaign with a deficit of tenpoints.
Despite the scoreline, Farsley had three clear chances to register a goal before Richard Pell's 40th minute opener, Gareth Grant twice squandering opportunities when clear on goal while Craig Dootson had to dive full stretch to tip over David Syers' 13th minute header from close range.
Grant went clear in the fourth minute, but pulled his shot wide when confronted by Dootson, then on 31 minutes a similar situation led to Grant mis-kicking before firing weakly at Alfreton's debutant keeper.
The Reds took some time to build up momentum, but once they did they looked continually dangerous and home keeper Piotr Skiba had to deal with an Anton Brown header on 24 minutes and a vicious 25-yarder from skipper Kyle McFadzean six minutes later that Skiba spotted very late in flight.
Brown then had a shot blocked just past the half-hour mark, with Paul Clayton dumped on the ground by Mark Jackson without being awarded a penalty before Liam Hearn sliced wide.
Pell's goal was a perfect header just inside the near post from 12 yards in receipt of an Ian Ross corner, and came seven minutes after Anthony Howell's header had been cleared off the line from a Dominic Roma cross.
The second half began tamely but Alfreton were just biding their time before turning the screw and a glut of corners brought their rewards, Howell again having a header hacked off the goal-line by David Pickering from one of Ross's accurate flag-kicks in the 65th minute.
Two minutes later a rare sortie by the home side led to Syers flashing a shot beyond the far post from a left-flank cross, but it was soon business as usual for the Reds with Josh Law playing a delightful 69th minute one-two with Hearn before seeing his angled drive turned behind by Skiba.
Andy Todd's introduction in the 72nd minute saw him immediately embark on a mazy run that was spoiled by his cross passing behind intended target Hearn, but within a minute Alfreton had doubled their advantage following another Ross corner.
Howell retrieved the over-hit delivery before pulling the ball back from the byline, Hearn then had to stretch to control it before turning and firing low past Skiba into the far corner of the net.
Seven minutes later the contest was over when Roma powered home the loose ball from 15 yards after Hearn had attempted to turn Todd's header over the line once again following a Ross corner.
There was a distinct possibility that Hearn had stabbed the ball over the line initially, but despite healthy claims from the England 'C' international after the final whistle the debutant full-back was credited with the goal.
