Joined Alfreton Town on a one-year deal on Thursday, July 5th, 2012. Phil began his playing career with Rotherham United before moving to Blackpool for £100,000 in August 1997. After making 170 apperarances he moved to Sheffield United on a free transfer in July 2004. Loan spells came at Torquay United and QPR but Phil was part of the United squad which gained promotion to the Premier League in the 2005/06 season.
The summer of 2006 saw him move to Grimsby Town on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Phil was named the Grimsby Supporters' Player of the Year for 2007-08. At the end of that season he had made over 100 appearances for the Mariners but by the end of the 2008/09 campaign he was released and joined Gainsborough Trinity on non contract terms. He signed for Trinity on contract in June 2009 and stayed at the Northolme until the end of the 2011/12 campaign.
